The ESG reporting challenge for agriculture & food companies

Deforestation-free supply chains

EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR, effective December 2025) bans imports of soy, cattle, palm oil, cocoa, coffee, timber, and rubber linked to deforestation post-December 2020. Companies must maintain geolocation data for every batch of regulated commodities. Non-compliance risks import bans and fines up to 4% of EU turnover — making traceability infrastructure a board-level priority.

Nature & biodiversity disclosure

TNFD (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures) is the emerging standard for nature risk disclosure, adopted by Kunming-Montreal CBD signatories. Agrifood companies must disclose land use by ecosystem type, biodiversity impact assessments using LEAP methodology, and dependence on ecosystem services (pollination, soil health, freshwater). Investors representing $20T+ in AUM have committed to TNFD adoption.

Agricultural labor & human rights

Seasonal and migrant agricultural workers are among the most vulnerable to labor rights violations. CSRD CSDDD requires food companies to conduct human rights due diligence across their value chains, including farms. Fair pay assessments, freedom of association, child labor elimination, and accommodation standards are all subject to disclosure — across supply chains that span dozens of countries.

Key ESG metrics for agriculture & food — tracked automatically

Every metric below is calculated, benchmarked against sector peers, and mapped to the frameworks investors, retailers, and regulators require.

Agricultural GHG Emissions & Soil Carbon
GHG Protocol · GRI 13

Total emissions from agriculture including enteric fermentation (CH₄), manure management (N₂O), synthetic fertilizer (N₂O), and land use change (CO₂). Soil organic carbon sequestration can offset a portion of emissions but requires measurement protocols (VERRA, Gold Standard) to generate credible carbon credits. Scope 3 Cat. 1 for food brands often exceeds 90% of total footprint.

Land Use Change & Deforestation
TNFD · EUDR · GRI 304

Hectares of land under different use types (cropland, pasture, natural habitat, conservation set-asides), deforestation rate per year (ha), and percentage of sourcing from deforestation-free origins with geolocation verification. EUDR requires GPS polygon data for all regulated commodity plots. TNFD LEAP methodology requires companies to assess their impact and dependence on nature across their full value chain.

Water Consumption & Irrigation Efficiency
GRI 303 · SASB FB

Total water withdrawn for irrigation and processing (m³/tonne of product), percentage from water-stressed basins, and water use efficiency per crop type. CDP Water Security questionnaire is required by major food retailers and institutional investors. Precision irrigation technology (drip, subsurface) typically reduces water consumption by 30–50% vs. flood irrigation while improving yields.

Biodiversity & Ecosystem Health
TNFD · GRI 304

Percentage of land under biodiversity-sensitive management (wildlife corridors, hedgerows, cover crops, reduced tillage), species richness monitoring, and habitat connectivity assessments. Kunming-Montreal GBF Target 3 (30×30) requires governments to protect 30% of land and sea by 2030 — creating policy drivers for agricultural biodiversity commitments. Regenerative agriculture certifications are rapidly gaining market recognition.

Fair Labor & Human Rights in Agriculture
GRI 408, 409 · CSRD CSDDD

Percentage of workers (own farms and tier-1 suppliers) earning above living wage benchmarks (Anker methodology), freedom of association rate, child labor elimination audit coverage, and accommodation and transport standards for seasonal workers. ILO Convention 184 on agricultural safety requires specific protections for farm workers. CSRD CSDDD applies to food companies with global value chains.

Sustainable Sourcing & Certifications
GRI 13 · CDP Forests

Percentage of key commodities sourced from certified sustainable origins: Rainforest Alliance, RSPO (palm oil), FSC (timber), Fairtrade, RTRS (soy), UTZ (cocoa). Certification coverage by weight, spend, and supplier count. Retailer sustainability commitments increasingly require 100% certified sourcing for Tier-1 commodities as a condition of supplier qualification — making certification management a strategic priority.
